In almost every gym, you will come across similar machines or equipments. Pec Deck machines are one of those popular machines used by many far and wide. Unfortunately, not many know of the problems associated with the pec deck machine. Though it is has been marketed to be a more enhanced and safer version of the conventional flye, the problems of pec deck are still many.

The pec deck machine was invented years ago to help build the pectoralis muscles, the major muscle in the chest area. There are some difference in using the pec deck machine and the conventional methods and this is where the problems of pec deck lie.

The pec deck machine, though good and excellent in helping aid the chest muscles has a problem where it puts the weightlifter in a position where injuries can easily occur.  The first problem of the pec deck is that it positions the shoulders of the weightlifter in an odd manner where it is unstable.  The shoulders are positioned in such a way where it is placed for external or lateral rotation. The weightlifter is seated, having his back erect leaning against a vertically straight chair or on a chair which is reclined instead of lying straight on his back. This together with the motion of arms when performing the exercises can cause exertion on the shoulders which may in turn cause injuries. The upper arms are positioned horizontally to the floor, in a 90 degree position and where his forearms are pointing vertically upwards leaning against the arm pads of the machine. This combination position of the arms and the seated position of the back cause the shoulders to rotate externally which causes an impact on the shoulders.

The fully furnished movements of this exercise includes the stretch of the chest backwards and also a position where the horizontal abduction of the chest occurs. This situation will cause shoulder instability where most of the causes will overlap. When the shoulders rotate externally, it forces the ligaments in the shoulders to be stretched and elongated. The ligaments both, in the front and in the bottom are affected. This stretch gets worse when the horizontal abduction of the shoulder occurs and the pull increases with every motion made by using the pec deck machine. Results of this can be very nasty to the weightlifter.

An excessive amount of stretching on the ligaments will cause them to be loose permanently which will in turn cause extensive amount of unbearable pain in the shoulder area with a variety of reasons to accompany it. Firstly, the ball located in the humerus, will shift positions. It might move closer to the socket, the glenoid fossa during the motions caused by using the pec deck machine. This will cause a lot of pain not only in the ligaments in the shoulders but also to the tendons in the biceps and the rotator cuff muscles close to the shoulders. This is because these other muscles and tendons have to work more in order to help the shoulders find more stability.

The Pec Deck machine is a good machine which is excellent in maintaining a good physique for the weightlifters, but there are still problems associated with it which must be looked upon.
